Inside NURA: Every Engine, and How It Senses Your World

NURA is not one program with a personality bolted on. It is a stack of small, deterministic engines — each computing one kind of truth on your phone — with an optional voice, Noora, that can read what they produce but never overrule them. This page names every engine, says what it computes, and tells you plainly whether it runs on-device or needs the AI key you supply yourself.

The astronomy engines — on-device, no key, no network

The prayer engine is pure solar mathematics: Julian day to sun declination to the hour angles for Fajr, Sunrise, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha. It carries 11 calculation methods, Hanafi and standard Asr, high-latitude rules, and an honest "unavailable" for polar day rather than a fabricated time. A line in the source forbids the model from ever producing or adjusting a time. The Qibla engine is spherical trigonometry — the great-circle bearing to the Kaaba, its distance, and the needle's rotation against your live heading; with no location it returns nothing rather than point at 0,0. The same sun model also draws the Sun's arc, the sky's colour, and the moon phase.

The Day Director and AutoPilot — pure client engines, no AI

Day Director reads your agenda and computes the Future Window (NOW / NEXT / LATER / PREPARE), a single glanceable state such as "leave now" or "focus," leave-and-prepare timing, a Life Heat level, and explainable recommendations that each carry a plain "why." It never invents an event or a travel time. AutoPilot's Time Flow layer finds occupied periods, free gaps and schedule risk, then surfaces at most one calm suggestion inside a strict notification budget. The file says it plainly: "No LLM, no network."

Presence, Health, Memory and the will

Presence infers sleep, places and attendance from device signals — each verdict hedged, with a confidence and a reason ("looks like you slept," never "you slept"). Its three switches are separately consentable and default OFF. Health classifies glucose, blood pressure, heart rate, weight, sleep and mood against published ranges, always with a "not medical advice — see a professional" note; it organises, it never diagnoses. Memory keeps categorised, consent-gated facts. Relationship engines decide whether Noora may speak at all, through deterministic budget and silence gates the model can never bypass.

How NURA senses your world

Location is read only when needed. A one-shot GPS fix — foreground, on demand, never a background stream — fills your prayer and Qibla location and lets Noora say "you're near downtown Houston." The magnetometer drives the Qibla needle only while the compass is on screen. There is no background-location mode as shipped: the app declares "when in use" and nothing more. Motion has two paths, both iOS, both foreground-honest: live device-motion powers the lift-to-hear-the-time and the alarm that rings until you pick the phone up; sleep is a once-a-day query of the motion coprocessor's own roughly seven-day history — an inference about the phone, never continuous tracking. Notifications are the one thing that fire while the app is closed: OS-scheduled local reminders carry the athan for Fajr, with a payload of only the prayer and kind. All rich audio — the in-app athan, hourly chime, spoken time — is foreground only.

Nothing is uploaded. Coordinates are never persisted by the presence store, no geofencing runs, and the places and attendance engines exist but are not yet wired to a sensor — so the only presence data actually captured is the daily sleep query and an on-demand current place. NURA is an observer of the phone, never a witness to the person.
